Life Saving Incident

July 24, 2020
New Jersey
Passaic County
Wycoff

Officers received a radio call regarding a 3 year old child not breathing and choking at the Wycoff New Jersey YMCA. The boy was being treated by the YMCA staff when Wycoff Officers Robert Schlossberg and Michael Scalise arrived. Officers Scalise and Schlossberg performed CPR on the child while attempting to clear his airway of any obstructions. "When a call like that comes involving a child, the whole headquarters clears out from detectives, patrol and the chief." Scalise said. "everyone tries to make their way there to see if they can assist. "There are a million things racing through your head and you try to mentally prepare." Scalise said. "You start thinking about the YMCA, the rooms in the building, where are the entrances, how is the child going to look like, will he be big enough for back blows, can we do a through (SIC) sweep? You just start to think about all the training we do multiple times a year." Schlossberg was the first on the scene and started to provide basic life support to the boy.The officer's were able to clear the boy's fully blocked airway and then he finally took a breath on his own. "The second he took a breath it was so incredibly real." Schlossberg said. . On these calls you just do everything you can and hope for the best, but when we got him to breath on his own we knew that was the biggest hurdle and step one." The child recovered and the officers were able to reunite with him at his home several days later. Officers Schlossberg and Scalise saved a human life. (Credit Northjersey.com Kristi Cattafi)

The history of law enforcement in the United States is a long and wonderful history of bravery. This website is dedicated to documenting the heroic deeds of law enforcement officers throughout the United States who have either given or risked their lives to save others. There are many stories of bravery and heroism for many who are considered first responders. However, it is those in law enforcement who are most likely to be the first to arrive upon a location requiring life saving acts engaging dangerous hostage takers, running into burning buildings/vehicles, providing first aid to seriously injured victims, saving near drowning victims and much more are what the women and men of law enforcement do routinely and at many times, great peril to their own safety.
It is our mission to document the history of lives saved by those dedicated women and men in law enforcement. To share with others the dramatic deeds of those individuals who are the first, first responders. It is so important for our citizens to understand that law "enforcement" is not always about enforcing the law but rather being there when our citizens need us.
It is to this end we are dedicated to promoting documentation regarding the history of law enforcement and the lives they have saved.
