Life Saving Incident
July 26, 2016
California
Los Angeles County
Pomona
On July 26, 2016, Pomona Police Dispatch received a report of a choking victim at the Los Jarritos Restaurant on N. Garey Avenue. Officer Jeff Hayward responded within 4 minutes of receiving the call. Officer Hayward quickly located the victim who was unconscious, on the ground, blue and showing signs of being close to death. Restaurant patrons told Officer Hayward they had attempted the Heimlich maneuver on the victim but it did not work and he had fallen to the ground. Officer Hayward immediately attempted a modified Heimlich maneuver while the man was still lying on the floor. This action cleared the victim’s airway and he began breathing on his own. He regained consciousness prior to being transported to the hospital. Captain Judd with the LA County Fire Department was also on scene. Captain Judd said that from the time he saw Officer Hayward driving toward the scene with red lights and siren, he knew he was motivated to get to the call and render aid. Without Officer Hayward’s immediate action, there was a high likelihood that the victim would have passed away, due to the amount of time that had already passed.
The history of law enforcement in the United States is a long and wonderful history of bravery. This website is dedicated to documenting the heroic deeds of law enforcement officers throughout the United States who have either given or risked their lives to save others. There are many stories of bravery and heroism for many who are considered first responders. However, it is those in law enforcement who are most likely to be the first to arrive upon a location requiring life saving acts engaging dangerous hostage takers, running into burning buildings/vehicles, providing first aid to seriously injured victims, saving near drowning victims and much more are what the women and men of law enforcement do routinely and at many times, great peril to their own safety.
It is our mission to document the history of lives saved by those dedicated women and men in law enforcement. To share with others the dramatic deeds of those individuals who are the first, first responders. It is so important for our citizens to understand that law "enforcement" is not always about enforcing the law but rather being there when our citizens need us.
It is to this end we are dedicated to promoting documentation regarding the history of law enforcement and the lives they have saved.
