On January 6, 2018, Arizona Department of Public Safety Trooper Henry (Hank) Roanhorse was driving home at the end of his patrol shift when he came across a vehicle stuck on the train tracks. Trooper Roanhorse approached the vehicle where he found an unresponsive man seat belted and unconscious in the driver’s seat. He also smelled a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. As Trooper Roanhorse crawled into the vehicle to remove the driver’s seat belt, he looked up and saw a BNSF Railway train approaching from around a curve. At the same time, the railroad signal activated and the crossing arms lowered. Recognizing the impending danger, Trooper Roanhorse pulled the unresponsive driver from the vehicle. Struggling to carry the nearly 300 lbs. driver, Trooper Roanhorse lowered him to the ground, grabbed him by the feet and pulled him off the tracks. Apparently unaware of the danger, the driver regained consciousness and began fighting Trooper Roanhorse. Even while in a violent struggle, Trooper Roanhorse managed to pull the man 25 feet from the tracks just as the passing train struck the vehicle. The impact caused the vehicle to travel 150 feet away and it sustained extensive damage. After the entire ordeal, the man told Trooper Roanhorse, “Thank you officer, you just saved my life.” Roanhorse stated that he just remembered hearing the screeching of the train’s emergency braking in the background as he struggled to remove the driver from the tracks. This incident occurred within McKinley County, NM, just across the Arizona state line, on Defiance Draw Road.

The history of law enforcement in the United States is a long and wonderful history of bravery. This website is dedicated to documenting the heroic deeds of law enforcement officers throughout the United States who have either given or risked their lives to save others. There are many stories of bravery and heroism for many who are considered first responders. However, it is those in law enforcement who are most likely to be the first to arrive upon a location requiring life saving acts engaging dangerous hostage takers, running into burning buildings/vehicles, providing first aid to seriously injured victims, saving near drowning victims and much more are what the women and men of law enforcement do routinely and at many times, great peril to their own safety.
It is our mission to document the history of lives saved by those dedicated women and men in law enforcement. To share with others the dramatic deeds of those individuals who are the first, first responders. It is so important for our citizens to understand that law "enforcement" is not always about enforcing the law but rather being there when our citizens need us.
It is to this end we are dedicated to promoting documentation regarding the history of law enforcement and the lives they have saved.
